Wedding Day at the Inner Temple, London
I took an early morning train into London at the end of August, the perfect time of year for a wedding.
The Inner Temple is most often associated with barristers and the law rather than joyful weddings. But the location is perfect and full of architectural significance. As a photographer, I just love being surrounded by great backgrounds.
Jenny and Aaron were getting ready near to the venue, so the first job was to capture them preparing for the big day. It’s a great chance to get out the wide angle lens and capture everything going on before the ceremony gets under way.
Jenny’s preparations were a hive of activity with the maid’s of honour bustling around. For close up shots of the makeup and other preparations such as the hairdresser, a mid-telephoto lens works a treat.
Expression and emotion are everything when it comes to recording events like these in the documentary style. Jenny’s father came with me to see his daughter in her wedding dress for the first time. That’s the kind of shot you always want to make sure you get.
The Wedding Ceremony
A lot can vary in wedding ceremonies and you have to take this into account when photographing them. The key, however, is to keep enough distance to ensure that you don’t get in the way. That means using small and mid-range telephoto lenses to capture everything that is going on at the time.
The Celebrations
With the ceremony over, it was off to the Pegasus Bar which is inside the Inner Temple. This is where you get some memorable shots as people begin to relax a little more and be themselves. For a documentary style photographer, it can create moments of magic.
As a photographer, it’s important to understand the dynamics of any wedding and make sure you are there to capture them. That includes things like the best man and father of the bride giving their speeches where you not only need to focus on the top table but the people listening as well and their reactions.
A great photo opportunity can come and go in the blink of any eye at a wedding so you always need to be on the ball. You also need to be confident enough to make sure you are in the right position.
